So I just happened to look back and see that I already did a post about YouTube and Vimeo. That’s what happens when you get older – your memory fades a bit. Oh well. So instead, since I talked about social media on Monday, I will put the power of sharing in today’s spotlight.
Whether you choose festivals or social media, you are going to be sharing your project with the world. Ok, maybe not the world at first, but you will be sharing with the public. And that’s part of the reason we do this, right? We want our projects to be seen by people – for recognition, for entertainment, for whatever. In this day and age when you can buy a camera for a reasonable price and gradually make your way to more equipment, that seems to be easier. Sure it wont be Hollywood quality, but that’s not the point. The point is being able to share your vision. Take the following example:
Here’s the link to their episode list: http://www.day304.com/episodes.html
Why am I picking this? For several reasons. If you look at their episode page, what do you see near the top? All those award postings. Now if you look at the work, it’s not Hollywood quality (No offense to the creators. I actually enjoy the series, though I haven’t had the time to watch past the second episode). The point is that this is a project that has gone to both film festivals and social media to get attention. And you know what? It has done just that. And now, fans of steampunk and the like can view this and share it with other friends.
The long and short of it is this: sharing is the only way you are going to get noticed. Whether you make a movie with your friends or actual actors doesn’t matter. What matters is you want to be seen. You are doing this because you love it and you have fun doing it. You have to be seen if you want to go anywhere in film. You may not make it right away (I’m still looking for the project that will do that for me), but it will be there. And why would you keep it to yourself.
